The time is now to find the American Spirit again. It is a time to reach out to our family, friends and our neighbors, especially the older ones, to check to see how they are doing and if you can do anything to help them.
While going thru some items I can across my book – Boston Marathon the First Century of the World’s Premier Running Event. I found my name on page 418 when I ran 2:22:08 on a warm day in 1980 to finish 33rd. Bill Rodgers won in 2:12:11. A few local runners in the top 50 included: Rick Sayre 18th-2:20:15, Duane Gaston 34th-2:22:10, Tom Blummer 36th-2:22:29, Doug Kurtis 43rd-2:24:25, Mike Foley 47th-2:25:14. I was hoping to run 2:21:54 which was the Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying time. I found out months later Jeff Galloway who finished one place in front of me with his 2:22:02 was granted a qualifying standard because of congestion at the start… In 1981 I finished 149th and 53rd in 1982.
Hopefully, I will see you at a race this summer.
Matt
