Road Runners Akron Marathon

2008-Womens-8km-Champions-logo.gif(Akron September 27) Washington, D.C.’s Birthanu Wukaw Zeieke, Bryon Center, Michigan Joshua Koros and Arlington, Virginia’s Michael Wardian battle most of the race before Zeleke pulled away for the $2,000 overall award with his 2:23:13. Koros (2:26:29) held off Wardian (2:26:52) for runner up honors and $1,000. Russia’s Michael Wardian (2:32:40) captured the master crown with his fourth place overall finish while New York’s master James Derick (2:33:32) finished next.

Cincinnati’s Denis Voronin (2:34:15) was the top Ohio finisher just missing overall money with his sixth place finish. Akron’s master Damon Blackford (2:37:31) was the second Ohio runner to cross the finish line with his tenth place finish. Westerville’s David Mars ((2:38:36) finished eleventh.

Highland’s Michigan’s Sarah Plaxton (2:57:56) outran Cincinnati’s Oxoana Khokhlova (2:59:16), Lexington, Kentucky’s Leah Peelman (2:59:58) and the rest of the women’s field for overall honors. Rocky River’s Jocelyn Rood (3:04:55) and Novi, Michigan’s Tracy Wollschlager (3:05:13) rounded out the top five.

Medinia’s Connie Gardner (3:13:18) won the $1,000 top women master money. Novi, Michigan’s Nancy Schubring (3:13:31) finished next in the master division.

Cuyahoga Falls’ Tony Harbert (2:56:34) and St Louis’ Heidi Chambers (3:29:17) won the grand master crowns.

Dublin’s Mike Hansen (1:15:09) held off Cuyahoga Falls’ Andrew Riggins (1:15:49) for the half marathon title.

Medina’s Mandy Yates (1:26:24) and Dublin’s Beth August (1:27:06) captured the first two women half marathon awards.

Avon Lake’s Bob Flajnik (1:18:46) and Columbiana’s grand master Terry Kenney (1:26:15) captured the first two master half marathon awards.

Avon’s grand master Michele Dewitt (1:35:53) and Michigan’s Deb Deren (1:37:53) took home the top two half marathon women master awards.

Boulder, Colorado’s Sara Slattery (25:54) nipped former Willoughby South High School and University of Michigan standout Katie McGregor (25:56) for over honors and $7,500 in the USATF Women’s 8km Championships. Providence’s Amy Rudolph (26:01) finished third while Providence Molly Huddle (26:06) placed fourth

Bellbrook’s Ann Alyanak (26:59) led the Ohio women across the finish line with her thirteenth place finish. Beavercreek’s Tara Storage (27:53) was the second Ohio women to finish.
