Nearly perfect October weather greeted the runners in the
All-
Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships at the
Methodist Theological School in Delaware. The meet hosted by
Ohio Wesleyan University is perhaps the most unique collegiate
cross-country race in the country as most of the Ohio colleges
and universities were on hand for the 52nd annual men's race
and the 27th annual women's race.
The men ran first this year and twelve runners hit the first
mile under five minutes in this 8km event. By the three mile
mark Bowling Green State University's freshman and Kenya native
Eddie Kipchoge, Ohio State University's junior Alex Bailey and
Cedarville College's freshman Daniel Roberts hit the three mile
mark under 15 minutes while University of Dayton's sophomore
Mike Andersen. Kipchoge (25:30) held on for the win while
Anderson closed the gap and finished just two seconds back.
Bailey (25:33) took home the bronze while Roberts hung on for
fourth in 25:40. Ohio State's sophomore Jeff See and junior
John Ealy both finished with a time of 25:42. Kent State's
senior Seth Hutchinson (25:57), Miami's junior Michael Veatch
(26:05), Ohio State's senior Glenn Collins (26:11),
Cincinnati's sophomore Randy King (26:15), Akron's junior Jason
Headman (26:17) and Malone's junior Ryan Kienzle (26:20)
rounded out the top twelve.
Ohio State University (42) with four runners in the top ten
won
the team title for the third straight year. University of
Cincinnati finished second with 87 points while Kent State
University finished third with 110 points.
Malone College repeated as the NCAA Division II/NAIA team
winner with 37 points.
Cedarville College (58) edged Ashland University (62) for
runner up honors.
Malone's junior Justin Baum (26:28) was the second NCAA
Division II/NAIA individual finisher after teammate Kienzle.
Ashland University's junior Evan Thomas (26:34) finished
third.
Mount Union College returned to the victory stand for the
Division III teams with 54 points. Ohio Northern University
(72) and Heidelberg College (115) finished next. Mount Union's
senior Jeremy Veliquette (26:36) took home top honors in
Division III. John Carroll University's junior Chris Kempf
(26:53) and Oberlin College senior Travis Grout (26:58)
finished next.
Nine women hit the first mile under 5:45. Wooster's senior
Katie Wieferich took a six seconds lead before the two mile
mark as she hit the mark with a 11:21. No Division I athlete
challenged her as she widen her lead to win easily in 18:11.
Wiederich who finished tenth last year became the first
Division III athlete to win individual honors in the All-Ohio
Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships. The only other
non Division I athlete to win this Championships was NAIA Rio
Grande's Ann Marie Hynes in 1997.
Bowling Green State University's junior Jamie Roflow (18:24)
and senior Kim Settle (18:30) finished second and third
respectfully. Ohio University's Andrea Maas (18:30), Ohio
State University's senior Melanie Price (18:33) and freshman
Sarah Foster (18:34) finished next. Akron's freshman Sediah
Erskine (18:38), Ohio State's sophomore Rachel Strichter
(18:39), Case Western Reserve University's junior Esther Erb
(18:42) Cedarville College senior Samantha Maat (18:46), Ohio
University's junior Carime Reinhart (18:52) and Case Western
Reserve University's sophomore Kristen Bowhers (18:57) rounded
out the top twelve.
Ohio University with two freshmen in their top four won the
women's team title with 63 points. Ohio State University
finished a close second with 73 points. Case Western Reserve
University with perhaps the best ever small college finish took
home the third place team award with 161 points.
Cedarville College won the NCAA Division II/NAIA team title
with 42 points. Malone College finished a close second with 50
points while Findlay College was third with 58 points.
Cedarville's Maat was the top NCAA Division II/NAIA finisher.
Findlay's junior Emily Gauger (19:13) and Cedarville's
sophomore Elisabeth Pyles (19:22) finished next.
Case Western Reserve University ran away with the Division
III
team title with only 39 points. Ohio Northern University and
Oberlin College each score 99 points, however, Ohio Northern's
sixth runner finished two places ahead of the Oberlin sixth
runner to give them the runner up spot.
