September 2005 RUNOHIO E-Newsletter

Our hearts go out to those in the hurricane-wracked states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama. We pray for those who have lost their lives in the storm, their families and those suffering the devastation of their homes, businesses and communities.

Hopefully, we all can do something to help those who are in need. Inside Texas Running last week was asking race directors to send left over shirts for the victims who are being housed in Houston - http://www.insidetexasrunning.com/news/clothingdrive2005.ht ml

The American Red Cross is working to help those in the devastated areas - http://www.redcross.org If we all give a little we can make a difference.

The IAAF World Track & Field Championships were held last month in Helsinki, Finland. Nearly 40,000 spectators watched the outstanding performances of each session of the nine-day event. However, many did not know they were being held as no major television network station or ESPN covered this year's event. Many subscribed to the World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) Internet coverage for only $4.95. Local newspapers ran a photo and an article everyday, but US track fans were disappointed with the television coverage.

Elyria's nineteen year old, Tianna Madison, won the long jump at the World Championships. In high school she had nine career state championships, including seven in individual events and became only the third athlete in Ohio history to win four events at a state championship meet two years in a row, in 2002 and 2003 Madison joined former Zanesville Rosecrans star Susan Nash (1983-84) and Cleveland East Tech/U.S. Olympic legend Jesse Owens (1932-33) on that list. She now is part of the University of Tennessee track program.

The Greater Columbus Sports Commission submitted a bid last month to the USA Track & Field Association to host its 2008 Olympic Trials in Columbus at the OSU Jesse Owens Memorial Track. Columbus will have stiff competition with two-time host Sacramento, California; Carson, California and Eugene, Oregon. The USA Track & Field Association will pick the host later this fall.
