My first marathon was the Glass City Marathon which used to be held on Father's Day.  As a freshman at Ohio Northern University I entered with a few of my track and cross country teammates.  My longest run at the time was 12 miles, but was in shape from cross country and track and finished 20th in 2:51.  The following year I ran 2:34ish, then I won on my third try a year later in 2:27:17 and after my senior year I finished second in 2:24:00.

The 45th running of the Toledo Marathon will be held on April 25th.  Due to COVID restrictions this year’s Mercy Health Glass City Marathon is sold out with 1,500 athletes as well as the Owens Corning Half Marathon with 2,500 athletes.  There is also a 5K on April 24th which at writing this is not sold out.

I will not be able to make the race, but good luck to everyone running.  Matt McGowan

Spring is Here

After one of the snowiest winter in a few years, spring is finally here.  Hopefully, you were able to get in some running this winter and are ready for the spring racing season.  I tried to compile an in person race calendar.  However, please double check the event is still being held as an in person running event.  Good luck and have great race. RUNOHIO start its’ 33rd year

The latest issue of RUNOHIO starts our 33rd year of the print RUNOHIO serving the running community.   RUNOHIO was introduced at the 1988 Columbus Marathon and was first printed March 1989. My brother Jeff and my mom, Jean McGowan, assisted with the start of the publication.  A number of difficulties have occurred since we started RUNOHIO, including Jeff passing in 2012 and my mom going to a nursing home five years ago and passed away in 2018.

The current issue of RUNOHIO was mailed out March 30th and will be in your favorite local running store the first week of April.

The Athlete’s Kitchen - Teaming Up with Good Nutrition

If you are a solo runner, you know the benefits that come from fueling your body wisely. When runners gather in teams, however, they can easily be swayed to participate in group meals that may focus less on nutrition and more on fun foods.

On the Run with Matt McGowan from January – March 2021 print RUNOHIO

The past eleven years I have had the honor to be on the selection committee to vote for the USA Track & Field National Hall of Fame.  Because of COVID 19 the 2020 USATF Hall of Fame induction was postponed until 2021. The USATF’s 42nd Annual meeting was held virtually earlier in December.

Track

Spring is the start of one of the oldest sport known to mankind – Track and Field. Track and Field is one of the most diverse sports as there are 17 different events for high school athletes and 20 for collegiate athletes to challenge themselves. According to The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) girl’s track and field is the largest participatory sport for high school girls and track & field is the second largest participatory sport for boys.  With the popularity and diversity of Track & Field why have some many Mid American Conference schools and other NCAA Division I universities dropped Men’s Track & Field.
