REVIEW OF SHOWDOWN
If you are a runner, were a runner, know a runner, or just like
the sport of running, Showdown is a DVD that you must see. This outstanding production follows five of America's
outstanding distance runners, as they prepare for the 2007 U.
S. Cross-Country Championships in Boulder, Colorado. The
profiles of Meb Keflezighi, Dathan Ritzenhein, Abdi Abdiraham,
Alan Culpepper, and Jorge Torres show what is needed from an
athlete's perspective in order to succeed. Interviews with
each runner allow the viewer to better understand the
dedication, focus, and motivation that is required to reach the
highest level of distance running.
As you view Showdown, it is interesting to see the differences
and similarities in the athletes' personal lives. One
unmistakable, common trait is their work ethic and the years of
dedication to the sport that they have invested and endured to
become elite distance runners. One segment illustrates the
challenging conditions that Ritz and training partner Jason
Hartman face, as they run 16 miles at altitude early on a
Sunday morning, a scene many readers can relate to. Interviews with coaches Bob Larson, Brad Hudson, and Alberto
Salazar give insightful views of their athletes. Author Michael
Sandrock, Weldon Johnson, and Dave Montz present yet other
viewpoints on what it takes to excel. Throughout the video, the
positive point is made that the future of American distance
running is very bright. Race footage of the Great North Run, in England, the Great
Edinburgh Cross-Country Race, and the 2006 USATF 10,000 also
provide to running fans entertaining moments. Coverage of
the "Showdown Race" in Boulder is well-done and illustrates
how, given the proper promotion, cross-country can be a
spectator-friendly sport. The musical background and quotes by
a wide range of people, from Bill Bowerman to Clarence Darrow,
further enhance the quality and creativity of this documentary. As you watch the 72-minute DVD, I think you will be inspired to
head out the door for a run. It is a great addition to your
library and will be viewed many times. (Price: $29.95, offered
on the USATF website - http://www.usatf.org) I hope you are looking forward to a great cross-country season.
If you are not a coach or runner, support your local teams as a
fan! Yours in track, Rod O'Donnell
